LIFE UPON THE ROCK - EXPECTANTLY SEEKING HIM

ABOUT ME

I am not a seminarian or professional theologian. I represent the majority of Christians occupying numerous roles.  Some of my callings are spouse, parent, sibling, friend, pro bono attorney and member of a local church. This blog documents glimpses of an imperfect person seeking the imprint of God in all things. The greatest obstacle to seeing His Image is allowing pride to block my view. Pride knocks out humility. When I lose the servant heart, become absorbed with myself, I lose the ability to know Him.

If I am serious about following hard after Christ, without a doubt, the greatest challenge will be making sure that everything I do is done in love. Everything- seriously?  These are the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 16:14.  Will I allow love to influence every decision I make? This scripture genuinely adopted as a way of life radically alters everything. Thinking “radically alters everything” is hyperbolic? Try it for a week.

Love wills the good of others. Our culture and sadly the Church so often overlook this essential truth. By love, all men will know I am Christ’s follower -not by how many times I attend church, not by my political affiliation and certainly not by a list of legalistic dos and don’ts kept, but simply by my love for others.

I Corinthians 12:31 is an often-overlooked, startling verse.  In this scripture, Paul declares a way to live that is par excellence! He resounds,  “I will show you the most excellent way!” Next, he shares the Magna Carta of love, the greatest passage on love ever written. Love is the gold standard, the hallmark of Christian authenticity and identification. Love incorporates truth and kindness into its core.

1 Corinthians 13 was never intended to be a set of warm suggestions that Christians choose to emulate when their mood is in sync with the passage. This text embodies the very essence of Jesus’ teachings- His wisdom, nature, and attitude. The more I embrace “the most excellent way”, the more others will experience Christ through me.

Why am I absolutely convinced this “excellent way” is not optional for Christs’ followers? Because of Galatians 5:6 -a shocking verse! The only thing that counts is faith shown through love expressed -not just felt. Love must be conveyed through action.

The bricks built upon The Rock must be fired from the very Grace and Power of the Triune God, and laid in the true spirit of love if they are to endure into eternity. This blog focuses on the beauty, challenges, and complexities inherent in attempting to live a life of love.
